China-Africa: China encourages firms to open shops in Nigeria

In order to assist in creating more job opportunities in the country, the Chinese government has revealed that she is currently encouraging her companies to focus more on setting up shop in Nigeria over exporting into the country. This was disclosed by Xu Jianguo, Chinese ambassador to Nigeria, yesterday, while donating $100,000 to the peace fund of the Economic Commission of West African States (ECOWAS) in Abuja.
Jianguo said, “Chinese government generally speaking encourages Chinese companies to invest in Africa, because I don’t think exporting Chinese products into Africa is a good thing.”
“If Chinese businessmen invest in Africa then they can create more working opportunities, they can create taxes. So our government encourages Chinese companies to invest in not only Nigeria, but even in ECOWAS member countries,” he added.
The envoy further held that his country was committed to helping in the development of the sub-region and the maintenance of its peace and security, an impression the president of ECOWAS, Mohammed Ibn Chambas noted was true.
However, it would be recalled that China has come under sharp criticism from the international community over its continued dealings with the embattled region of Sudan and its failure to outrightly condemn the alleged crime of genocide being perpetuated by the Arab faction in Darfur.
